Over the next couple of days you enjoy the most rest you’ve had in months; no monsters to kill, no one to rescue, no favors needing done, and no worries of the keep.
The mood of Overlook gets better by the day. News comes out of Bordrin’s Watch that the orcs, now leaderless and cut off from the tunnels, have no choice but to attack the very defensible mountain stronghold. Everyone held their collective breath as the first bits of information came out, then relaxed when they learned the war will soon be over.
You have become celebrities of sort in Overlook. Your broaches are recognizable even to the lowest beggars, mothers point you out to their children, kids run up and say they want to be like you when they grow up, elderly people thank you for your efforts.
The word of Rock Hammer hold spreads a bit as well. For some people, the war is a good reminder to them to get out of urban areas and out of such desirable targets of orcs. Perhaps you’ll see an influx of residents to your valley.
Gift came aplenty to you over the days. Most of it home baked goods, but the best was probably new custom made saddles for everyone made by a former dwarven acolyte of the Monastery of the Sundered Chain. If you are to ride the former horses of the Glorious Defenders, at least you can have your own gear.
On the 18th of Eleint Elder Cadrick announces that the war is over as what remains of Karg’s army has splintered and left the mountains. A celebratory banquet has been announced for that evening.
The festivities are held in the High Hall and it seems like most of Overlook is packed in this large room. Elder Cadrick thanks everyone for their efforts and hands out many awards to the courageous defenders at Bordrin’s Watch. When your time comes up, the crowd goes wild as if they were waiting the whole night for the announcement. Word got around the city that if not for your efforts, orcs would have been in the streets of Overlook days ago, but instead they never came within miles of the dwarven built city. You also get a sense that the fact that you were not from here also endeared you to the crowd.
The ceremony winds down and the drinking begins. Music, food, and laughter abound throughout the halls well into the evening.
Perhaps it is the ale, or perhaps it is the way the crowd reacted to you. But you cannot help but feel like you are being watched.
As you head back to the inn for the night you duck down a side street to avoid the crowds. Sudden movement catches your eye – a horse tethered to a hitching post stomps as you approach. From behind you, a voice calls out, “
Took a wrong turn friends. Too bad it’ll be your last.” Two human warriors move up from where they must have been following you, battleaxes pulled from beneath their cloaks as they attack.
Nice cliffhanger for our next session, eh?
